SES | Senior Executive Service
The Federal government is seeking men and women with well-honed executive leadership skills and qualifications that can continue to transform government at the highest levels in the Senior Executive Service. As an Air Force veteran, you may be in a position to seek this type of visionary role in the federal government. SES jobs can be found by visiting www.usajobs.opm.gov and perform a search on the keyword SES. This site also provides additional background on the SES or senior executive service concept.
The primary selection criteria for SES positions are executive qualifications with a focus on the ability to lead. SES senior management positions are for visionaries and achievers seeking a rewarding and active role in the Federal government. Technical skills and qualifications are important, but critical leadership traits such as those developed in the Air Force are needed at these executive levels in order to succeed.
One of the keys to the SES application process is the development of compelling Executive Core Qualifications or ECQs. The ECQs are Leading Change; Leading People; Results Driven; Business Acumen; and Building Coalitions/Communication. These ECQs are designed to highlight active leaders and achievers. In the SES executive role you are expected to make things happen and get results instead of simply managing a process or overseeing a department.
Disapprovals of SES applications are usually due to the candidate not meeting the executive qualifications requirements or not adequately addressing his/her qualifications in terms of the five ECQs. Our ISO 9001 guided processes reliably ensure that your special or unique qualities indicating a likelihood of executive success are documented with the proper key phrases and words, prominently describing your leadership.
7 Questions to ask yourself if you are considering applying for a Federal SES position:
- Do you share a broad perspective of government and a public service commitment which is grounded in the Constitution?
- Are you interested in serving in the key positions within Federal government just below the top Presidential appointees?
- Would you like to serve as one of the major links between Presidential appointees and the rest of the Federal work force?
- Are you qualified to lead and oversee nearly every government activity in one of approximately 75 Federal agencies?
- Do you have the personal and professional passion to serve as one of the top executives in Federal government?
- Are you a visionary leader and able to motivate personnel, build partnerships, and communicate with customers?
- Do you possess solid management skills in order to produce optimum results with limited resources?
If so, The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) wants to hear from you and our team of Executive SES Writers can assist you in developing the very comprehensive and complex Federal SES application package.
The SES Federal Resume must highlight executive traits and provide strong examples in support of the above Seven Questions. This Federal resume is comprehensive yet concise, substantiates not only your experience, but vision, results, business acumen, coalition building, and ability to lead change and lead people. It is written to the most senior executive level and must contain, and be in compliance with, Federal application protocol. Our SES Writers have successfully developed hundreds of SES Federal Application Packages and stand ready to partner with you.
Executive Core Qualifications were developed to describe five fundamental executive qualifications:
Leading People
Leading Change
Building Coalitions
Results Driven
Business Acumen
ECQs are designed to assess executive experience and potential--not technical expertise. ECQs measure whether an individual has the broad executive skills needed to succeed in a variety of SES positions--not whether they are the most superior candidate for a particular position. Each ECQ must stand on its own and describe a situation, task, action, and result (STAR) or context, challenge, action and result (CCAR), as well as combine 27 other competencies within the five ECQ statements. Most people find ECQs very difficult to develop. Our SES Writers partner with you to develop the best answers and address all competencies.
